The Future Metropolis

KK Leung

Artist Statement

Large-scale floor art not only furnishes public spaces, but also allows people to slow down and reimagine their living experience in the bustling city. Inspired by the idea of the future metropolis, the artwork is intended to invigorate our sensory perception with optical illusion effects and complex compositions. This illustration is made of foreground, middle ground and background to enhance the sense of depth. The multi-dimensional space with no single vanishing point allows the audience to enter this science-fictional metropolis from multiple perspectives. The futuristic buildings in the background originate from the iconic landmarks near Tamar Park, with a gradation of colour from orange to purple that makes the imagined metropolis more dynamic.

Artist Biography

Since graduating from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a major in Communication Design, KK Leung has been exploring cultural innovation through art. Originally a designer, Leung blends his design skills with craftsmanship and is now working as a designer in a secondary school. He organised an exhibition on the Chinese Five Elements in the public art space of Central Market to probe the relationship between art and Chinese medicine. He also took part in a papercraft lampshade seminar in the College of Professional and Continuing Education. Later this year, Leung will organise a solo exhibition to explore the application of 3D holograms and virtual reality.
