In Chinese tradition, turtles symbolise long life, so they are good motifs for anniversary celebrations. Also, adult sea turtles go back to the beach where they were born to lay their eggs, like travellers who have left home for a long time but always wish to return home.
One of the artworks of the Decoding Nature Series, this installation was inspired by the mathematical structure of turtle shells. The body is a parametric framework, which was calculated using structural engineering software. It is made of steel, painted the colour of the Hong Kong Orchid Tree and covered by a colourful plexiglass world map with a “Care about the Earth” message. Its limbs are recycled-wooden benches crafted with an ergonomic surface that visitors can use to sit on for a rest or take selfies. Visitors can change the colour of the lighting with a mobile app from mid-July onwards.
Natural structures are organic and sometimes poetic, but never chaotic. They follow certain rules that can be explained by mathematics or scientific findings. If you look closer to your surrounding environment, you will be amazed at how orderly nature is. In fact, nature develops its structures in order to reach optimal energetic, long-term solutions. Common arrangements are shells, trees, webs and skeletons, all of them are controlled by certain factors, such as forces of nature, global forms, local structures and quality of material. Inspired by “mathematical structures in nature”, I created a series of installations collectively named Decoding Nature for the “Science in Art” exhibition.
The series comprises three large-scale exhibits: a turtle-shaped parametric structure titled Loving Home, a group of metallic sculptures titled Coral Fractals and a piece of stone-mural titled Eternal Light of a Seashell.
The works of cross-disciplinary artist Victor Wong include paintings, sculpture, digital-art, animation, film, AR, VR, and more recently, artificial intelligence. Most of his works aim to blend new technology with the Chinese philosophy of nature.
After graduating from the University of Washington in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Victor has been pioneering the digital creative media industry in Hong Kong for nearly 30 years. He once served as a digital media consultant for Hong Kong Cyberport and the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic & Vocational Qualifications and received the Ten Outstanding Young Persons award in 2005.
He founded a digital visual production company, called vfxNova, and has developed visual effects for over 120 feature films. His work has won numerous international design awards, including the New York Festival Awards, the Tokyo JIAA Advertising Awards, the Hong Kong Film Awards, and The Golden Horse Awards.
In 2015, he created new ink art using 3D digital technology and Artificial Intelligence and created A. I. Ink Painting Artist “A. I. GEMINI” as his “creative partner”. In 2019, he exhibited his first “TECH-iNK”, titled Series Escapism, at the Ink Art Pavilion “INK NOW”, in Taipei, and Far Side of the Moon, in London. Recently, Victor was awarded “MARTELL Artist of the Year 2019 (Asia)”.
